Clue-based comedy skit interactive with crowd
April 6, 2006
Is it Professor Plum in the billiard room with the wrench, or was it Randy in the Memorial Union with the revolver?
Almost every student during their childhood has experienced the excitement of unravelling the mystery game Clue. Now, students have the opportunity of revisiting the childhood mystery.
ISU AfterDark is sponsoring Mystery Dinner Theatre, an interactive comedy from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday.
Two actors from Randy Manning’s St. Louis-based company, Jest for Fun Entertainment, will be hosting the dinner. Although the actors help guide the show, the event is more about the audience than the actors.
“These are funny, silly, over-the-top murder mysteries. We want the audience to have fun and we want them to be the stars,” Manning said.
Each guest will get a card with a role to play on it, and students will act while eating dinner. One of the audience members will be the killer, a character will die and the actor helps moderate as dinner guests solve the mystery.
“It should be a really fun night with good food,” said Mary Witte, president of ISU AfterDark.
“We’ve never done an event like this, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Manning said the show is for everyone, even those who may not want to be the center of attention. Participants who don’t want main roles will be given parts that have the potential to be as interactive as participants want them to be.
“Later on in the middle of the show – when they realize this is fun and funny and everybody is having a good time – they can jump up and shout out their part and feel inclined to join in,” he said.
Manning writes the material, which is performed by approximately eight to 10 improv actors. Jest for Fun’s shows use one of several comedy mysteries for its events, including shows with themes of Christmas, a Western and pirates. The ISU show will have a gangster theme.
“I think it sounds like a really good idea,” said Tara Box, junior in sociology. “It would be something new and different that’s not a usual Friday night.”
Tickets are available in room B6 of the Memorial Union. Tickets must be picked up from the office space before 5 p.m. Friday. The event is free and open to ISU students, but there is a maximum of 120 people who can participate.
ISU AfterDark has several more activities planned for the semester. A craft night is scheduled for April 28. Free bowling, billiards and bingo for prizes, among other activities, are offered throughout the year for weekend fun.
