Home season ends for ISU tennis with victory, tough defeat

The ISU tennis team wrapped up its home season with two days of competition, beating Nebraska-Omaha 7-0 Saturday to grab a win in its Senior Week.

A crowd of friends and family witnessed seniors Beth Chermel and Charlotte Ljungkrantz winning the final home games of their ISU careers. Chermel said the conclusion was difficult to comprehend.

“It hasn’t started to sink in yet,” she said. “It’s hard to think of it as done because we still have matches left.”

Chermel beat Nebraska-Omaha’s Maggie Russell 6-2, 6-2 on the No. 3 court, and Ljungkrantz defeated Amy Pierson 6-1, 6-1.

The Cyclones dominated every match against Nebraska-Omaha. Freshman Kara Hickey won a three-set match against Rachel Faulk, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. No other match’s final score, however, was close. Also collecting wins on the day were Eve Soriano, Jill Palen and Chrissy Derouin.

The team also swept all three doubles matches against Nebraska-Omaha to go undefeated in doubles for the weekend.

The Cyclones played a tough conference match against Missouri, falling 4-3. The loss could have easily been a win, but sophomore Caitlin Loprinzi fell ill during her match.

“I started off well,” Loprinzi said. “I’ve been a little sick, not to make excuses, because she was playing well and running down balls. But it was a combo of heat and I was sick to my stomach, and I couldn’t move well. It’s frustrating because we lost 4-3. I just wish I could have played them another day.”

Loprinzi was leading in the match, but fell 6-4, 6-3 because of the onset of illness.

Derouin defeated Valeria Dandik, 6-0, 6-2 and Hickey defeated Lubica Nadasska, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2. Derouin and Hickey were the only Cyclones victorious in singles Friday.

During doubles Friday, it was evident that communication was key in the effectiveness with which the team dismantled Missouri. “You got it?” Derouin yelled as the ball sailed over her head to partner Danielle Uscinski. The players won their match 8-5, as did Chermel and Hickey. Palen and Soriano won their doubles match 8-4.

Friday marked the largest turnout at a home game this season by far.

More than 200 people watched the Cyclones play by the end of the day, including passers-by walking home from class who stopped to see what the fans were cheering about.
