Intramural golf event to overlap celebration

The annual two-player best shot golf tournament, which is held each year at Veenker Memorial Golf Course, will be held April 22, the Saturday of Veishea.

Linda Marticke, intramural program coordinator, said she tries to schedule the tournament in late April so participants of the event have nice weather for golfing. Because Veishea will also be celebrated toward the end of April, the celebration and intramural golf tournament will overlap this year.

Marticke said participation may be down from the 52 teams that participated last year because playing in the tournament will cause students to miss the Veishea parade.

Although the overlap may affect participation in the tournament, she said she enjoys being able to provide an intramural activity to students during Veishea.

“I like to consider us part of Iowa State and the Veishea celebration,” Marticke said of the intramural department. “If the turnout is low this year, I will attribute it to Veishea and change the date for next year.”

Marticke said the tournament has been around as long as she can remember and is the only golf tournament the intramural department offers.

Each team in the event will consist of two players, with both players hitting off of every tee. Following the tee shot, the team will decide which ball to play and will both hit from that spot. Every shot will be done this way, which is where the tournament gets its name, “best shot.”

Although there is no green jacket on the line, the winners of each flight will receive a coveted intramural champion T-shirt. The flights, of which there were four last year, are essentially an even breakdown of the skill levels after the scores are all reported. The event also includes a long-drive contest, longest-putt challenge and a closest-to-the-pin contest.

Teresa Balsley, club house manager and tournament coordinator at Veenker, said the course helps run the tournament but the intramural department does “95 percent of the work.”

“We create the scorecards, help check students in – mainly golf-related tasks,” she said. “The Iowa State intramural office does most of the organizing.”

Balsley added that participants of the tournament receive a discount from the regular weekend price at Veenker because it is an event geared toward ISU students.

“Because it is an Iowa State student event, we are able to give that discount and charge the weekday rate instead of the weekend rate,” she said.

Balsley has been working with the intramural department to coordinate the tournament for 15 years and said it is a great opportunity for students to play in a golf tournament for a relatively cheap price.

“It’s just fun, it’s pretty inexpensive, plus you can always win the prizes,” she said.

The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. April 22. Marticke said the event should run for about six hours. The deadline to register is April 19, and entry forms must be turned in along with a $20 fee per person to the Recreation Services office at 2220 State Gym.
