Softball drops two games
April 9, 2006
The Cyclones went into their two-game weekend series with a goal of climbing two games above .500, but when the dust settled after the Big 12 matchup, they found themselves sitting two games below .500.
The Cyclones gave up a 2-0 loss Saturday against Texas Tech.
They were about to bounce back to .500 Sunday before Texas Tech’s Brooke Neuman homered off pitcher Amie Ford to lead off the seventh, tying the game at three apiece.
The Red Raiders went on to win in extra innings, handing the Cyclones a 4-3 loss.
ISU coach Stacy Gemeinhardt was unavailable for comment because of the team’s travel schedule.
Things didn’t start out great for the Cyclones, as Ford gave up a first-inning run, putting them in a 1-0 hole.
But the offense showed resiliency, bouncing back to tie the game at one, taking the lead.
The offense, however, missed out on a key opportunity to increase the lead in the top of the seventh, failing to score after loading the bases.
The offense went dormant in the eighth inning, going quietly 1-2-3, while Texas Tech’s offense took advantage of an error to score a run off Alyssa Ransom, who came in after the seventh to replace Ford.
Ransom took the loss, her latest in an increasing line of tough losses.
She pitched well against Texas, Iowa and Texas Tech, but one or two mistakes hampered Ransom in each game, and as a result saw her record drop to 6-9.
Saturday Ransom cruised through the first three innings, allowing only two hits.
She had two outs in the fourth before Texas Tech’s Robyn Wike doubled, plating two runners. The one mistake proved to be all the Red Raiders needed to defeat the Cyclones.
Red Raider pitcher Erin Crawford shut out the Cyclones offense, holding them to a mere two hits.
The Cyclones (16-18, 1-5) will try to work back to .500 Tuesday when they play Drake at 4 p.m. at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
