“Murray’s Revenge” (Record Collection)
Sounds like: Atmosphere, Living Legends, Felt
REVIEW: 3.5 / 5
In short: Overall, “Murray’s Revenge” is nice, clean fun for anybody who is looking for some fun rhymes without the overwhelming grit of guns cocking or people pawning off swear words and hip-hop.
Murs, known for his participation in the hip-hop group Living Legends, as well as one half of the group Felt with Slug of Atmosphere, approaches the game a little differently with his most recent project with 9th Wonder, “Murray’s Revenge.”
After the first time listening to this album the listener may be checking the case for a “clean edition” or “edited” sticker, as Murs does the entire album without swearing once. There is no mistake however, because the entire album is craftily produced to bring out the most vivid of scenes from Murs’ hometown of Los Angeles. There is no interrupting the flow with expletives that would make even George Carlin blush – as found on countless other hip-hop albums.
Although short, the album is full of rhymes that bring to life the world that Murs lives in. In the track “Barber Shop,” the scene of a group of guys going down to the local barbershop for a cut and to talk about life is painted clearly enough that listeners can almost feel the razor against their heads.
The track entitled “Dark Skinned White Girls” finds Murs empathizing with girls who don’t fit in with their surroundings, as he reassures them that it is fine to be different as long as you are yourself.
