CD REVIEW: Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys

“Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” (Domino)

Sounds like: The Strokes, The Streets, Oasis

REVIEW: 4.5 / 5

In short: Although monkey mania most likely won’t sweep the country, these U.K boys sound mighty good.

A British band hasn’t been as highly anticipated as the Arctic Monkeys since Oasis, and from the looks of things, the Monkeys are going to live up to the hype. Going from nobodies to No. 1 on the British pop charts in less than six months with the single, “When the Sun Goes Down,” the Monkeys have found success almost overnight.

They are about to embark on a mostly sold-out U.S. tour, and like British bands before them, the Monkeys are looking like they will be just as big, if not bigger, than they have become in their homeland. After giving their CD several listens, I can safely say these guys are not a one-hit-wonder. Compared to other Brit-rock bands such as the Strokes, the Monkeys lyrics seem to have unearthed a new idea – British emo.

Their juvenile lyrics paint a portrait of everyday suburban life aimed at teens, singing about run-ins with old school mates, cops and girls. Musically, these boys are a great imitation of what has been selling. Buzz-saw guitars and steady drums crank out somewhat generic, but still very catchy tunes.

“Whatever People Say” is definitely an album to buy. Most songs are of hit-quality, and standouts include “Fake Tales Of San Francisco” and “Certain Romance, A.” Flavorful and different than anything you’ll hear stateside, the Arctic Monkeys are worth your time.
