Emily Jensen and Sara Faber will take over the executive offices of the Government of the Student Body after an inauguration ceremony April 10.

The results of the GSB general elections were announced Thursday night at the Maintenance Shop of the Memorial Union during a presentation from Election Commissioner Mansoor Khadir, senior in economics.

Of the 2,768 students who cast votes for GSB president and vice president, 1,277 voted for Jensen, who served as current GSB President Angela Groh’s chief of staff, and runningmate Faber – 1,100 voted for Henry Alliger, currently an off-campus senator, and his running mate, GSB Interfraternity Council Senator Brooks Nelson.

Jensen said she’ll work to reform GSB’s image and visibility at the start of her term.

“My No. 1 priority is communication,” she said. “Right away, I want to meet with students and student groups.”

She said she will also encourage other GSB officials to identify themselves in classes and put together events at which students can meet with their GSB representatives.

Alliger, who experienced his second defeat in a bid for GSB president, said he wouldn’t change any of his campaign tactics if given the chance to run the race over, and the defeat will not put an end to his efforts as a student advocate.

“I’ll continue working for students,” he said. “I’ll keep working with ActivUs and keep working for student interests.”

He said he would pursue continued involvement with GSB, but he didn’t know in what capacity.

Ties occurred in several senate races. Tristan Taber and Brian Mastalir tied for the only College of Design spot with seven votes each, Jeremy Oehlert and Brian Phillips tied for the ninth off-campus senatorial spot, Mitchell Cline and Thomas Danielson tied for one of four IRHA spots with 13 votes and seven candidates tied with one vote each for the single Schilletter University Village spot.

GSB bylaws require ties to be broken by a vote from constituency councils for each spot, which will occur between the end of Spring Break and the inauguration. Phillips, who also won a senatorial bid for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, said he would withdraw from the off-campus race.

Groh said she was pleased with the election results.

“I’m really excited,” she said. “Emily [Jensen] and Sara [Faber] will do a fantastic job.”

She said she will help to ease the transition between the end of her term and the beginning of Jensen’s.

“After Spring Break, I’ll bring Emily [Jensen] to meetings with me and show her the process and the position in depth,” she said.

A referendum for the construction of a new cultural center in the Memorial Union also passed with 1,326 in favor and 1,158 voting against the center.
