An ISU football player pleaded not guilty Monday to charges that he assaulted a former student in a nightclub in January.

Durrell Williams, 19, freshman in liberal arts and sciences-open option, was arrested by the Ames Police Department Feb. 1 and charged with assault causing serious injury at Club Element, 2401 Chamberlain St.

According to past Daily staff reports, Williams’ warrant said he assaulted former ISU student Nathan Johnson without justification, causing a serious injury.

According to the document, Williams punched Johnson in the face unprovoked, breaking a bone and knocking him out.

Williams’ assault charge is a felony that carries up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. His preliminary hearing is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. March 30 in the Story County District Court in Nevada, according to court records.

Williams’ teammate Gregory Coleman, 20, sophomore in pre-business, was also arrested and charged with simple assault in the incident. He faces a misdemeanor charge with a $500 fine if convicted. Coleman’s trial is scheduled to be held at 1:30 p.m. March 21 in Story County District Court.

Both players were suspended from the team.
