Doris Henson returns to Maintenance Shop

Dan Mcclanahan

Kansas City band Doris Henson is beginning to bust out of its local scene. They opened for Mates of State last fall at the Maintenance Shop and now they’re coming back through town as a headlining act. Wes Gartner, drummer for the band, took some time out while touring to answer a few questions.

What’s the meaning behind the band name?

Doris Henson was Matt’s aunt, although [they were] not related. She died a couple of years before we formed. We couldn’t think of a band name and her name just popped up.

What are five albums everyone should listen to?

Brian Eno – “Another Green World”

The Talking Heads – “Talking Heads: 77”

Gang of Four – “Entertainment!”

The Modern Lovers – “The Modern Lovers”

T. Rex – “Electric Warrior”

Describe your sound, and mention other acts you sound like.

There is no way to describe our sound and there are no bands we sound like. You just have to hear it.

What are your goals?

To play music all over the world for everyone. Isn’t that the goal of any band?

Craziest experience as a band thus far – don’t hold back.

The craziest experience wouldn’t be able to be printed. But, the best experience was sharing the stage with the drummer from Billy Corgan’s band [Matt Walker] at the sold out Fillmore show in San Francisco.

Why people should see your show?

Because we are the best live show you’ve seen. Not to be pretentious, but its true. Once you’ve been there, you’ll know.
