Iowa State granted permission to speak to Milwaukee’s Jeter

MILWAUKEE – Iowa State has been granted permission to talk to Wisconsin-Milwaukee coach Rob Jeter about the Cyclones’ coaching vacancy, according to Bud Haidet, athletic director at Milwaukee.

Haidet confirmed Monday that Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard requested and was given permission to talk to Jeter.

Jeter, former assistant to Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan, led Milwaukee to the NCAA tournament as Horizon League champions in his first year as coach. The Panthers lost in their second tournament game.

Iowa State fired coach Wayne Morgan and his staff Friday in the wake of the failure to reach postseason play, as well as a reported recruiting scam.

Jeter took over as coach at Milwaukee a year ago, after Bruce Pearl led the Panthers to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament and then left to become coach at Tennessee.

Jeter was an assistant on Ryan’s staff when Ryan coached Milwaukee for two seasons, 1999-2001, and he followed Ryan to Madison as a member of the Badgers coaching staff.

Jeter was captain of Ryan’s Wisconsin-Platteville team that won the NCAA Division III championship in 1991.
