LETTER: Alliger, Nelson plan to lobby Legislature
March 1, 2006
I plan to vote for Henry Alliger and Brooks Nelson for the Government of the Student Body president and vice president because they are “all about action.” For Alliger and Nelson that is more than a slogan; it is how they plan to make GSB work for you and produce real results, such as giving students a voice and helping to stabilize tuition.
As a fifth-year senior, I have seen the tremendous increases in tuition and — like many of you – I will graduate with a considerable amount of debt. I know all candidates have ideas about tuition increases and how they affect students, but Alliger and Nelson’s thoughts are more than just ideas, they are real proposals that can have a major impact on student life.
One action that Alliger and Nelson will take when elected is to network with the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa to form a united student association to address the statewide issue of higher tuition. By combining our efforts, we, as students, will have a stronger voice and our tuition increases will be more predictable.
I have worked with Alliger for three years and know that he cares deeply about this issue and the students here at Iowa State. I know because I have seen and shared in his efforts making calls, writing letters, handing out information and lobbying at the state capitol.
This spring Alliger has helped to organize students to raise the profile of student debt as a national problem. We need Alliger and Nelson leading GSB to fight for affordable tuition and students’ interests.
I will be voting for Alliger and Nelson March 3 to 6 at Vote.iastate.edu, and I strongly encourage you to take action and do the same. It is quick and easy and will make a tremendous difference in the lives of both current and future ISU students.
