Two Cyclone players named to all-Big 12 teams
March 7, 2006
Two ISU men’s basketball players earned all-conference honors, the Big 12 announced Monday.
Guard Curtis Stinson was named to the all-Big 12 second team and guard Will Blalock earned third-team honors. Votes for the awards were placed by Big 12 coaches.
Stinson ranks in the top three in the conference in scoring, assists and steals. The junior’s average of 19.3 points per game is the highest individual output by an ISU player since Marcus Fizer averaged 22.8 points per game in 2000.
This is the second consecutive season Stinson has been named to the second team. He was also a third-team selection as a freshman.
Blalock earned third-team honors after averaging 15.4 points per game. The junior also leads Iowa State in assists, passing out 6.1 dimes each game.
Texas forward P.J. Tucker was named Big 12 Player of the Year and was on the all-conference first team along with Colorado’s Richard Roby, Kansas’ Brandon Rush, Texas Tech’s Jarrius Jackson and Texas teammate LaMarcus Aldridge.
Rush was also selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
Joining Stinson on the second team were Oklahoma seniors Taj Gray and Terrell Everett, Kansas State guard Cartier Martin and Texas A&M forward Joseph Jones.
Missouri’s Thomas Gardner, Texas A&M’s Acie Law and Texas’ Brad Buckman and Daniel Gibson joined Blalock on the conference’s third team.
Kansas coach Bill Self was named Big 12 Coach of the Year, leading a young and inexperienced Jayhawk team to a 13-3 conference record, good for a share of the league crown with Texas.
