Recruits expected to play for Coach McDermott
March 30, 2006
DES MOINES – Iowa State recruit Cory Johnson will honor his commitment to play for the Cyclones and Lawrence Westbrook will likely do the same, ISU Coach Greg McDermott said Wednesday.
Johnson, Westbrook and P’Allen Stinnett, a 6-foot-3 guard from Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas, were former coach Wayne Morgan’s final recruits. Stinnett told McDermott last week that he wanted to enroll in prep school, and Iowa State released him from his letter of intent.
Johnson, a 6-foot-7 forward from Duluth East High (Minn.), said last week he would talk to McDermott before making a decision. McDermott met with Johnson in Duluth this week. Following the visit, McDermott said that “everything is fine,” and that Johnson will be in Ames next fall.
Johnson will have a chance to step in right away and help Iowa State’s beleaguered frontcourt.
“He plays with tremendous intensity. He’s a big strong player that can face the basket as well as bang inside,” McDermott said of Johnson.
“He fits into our system very well.”
Westbrook’s situation isn’t as clear. But after conversations with Westbrook, a 6-foot guard currently attending Winchendon Prep (Mass.), McDermott said Westbrook is still on track to play for the Cyclones.
Westbrook led the nation in scoring at 40.1 points a game for Chandler High (Ariz.) in 2004-05, shooting 35 percent from 3-point range and 83 percent from the free throw line.
With Will Blalock and Curtis Stinson entering their names into the NBA draft and Tasheed Carr expected to transfer, Westbrook will be most likely be a front-runner for a starting spot in the Cyclones’ backcourt.
“At least at this point it appears he’s coming to Iowa State,” McDermott said.
“But there’s still a few questions there.”
