Boone board to vote soon on proposed keg ordinance

Those looking to side-step the county’s new keg ordinance by going to Boone may need to rethink their plans.

10 a.m. Wednesday the Boone County Board of Supervisors will hold the third and final reading for a keg registration ordinance modeled after one passed by Story County earlier this year.

If today’s vote at the Boone County Courthouse is successful, the ordinance will take effect June 1, or 60 days after it is passed.

One organization that was influential in getting Story County’s ordinance passed is happy to see the effort spreading.

“We’re definitely pleased that Boone County is thinking of the best health and safety of their citizens,” said Eric Carlson, public information officer for Youth and Shelter Services, Inc.

Gerri Bugg, community, family and youth development services director for YSS, said Boone County Supervisors “really followed” the passage of Story County’s ordinance.

“I know they attended the first reading for Story County, and they were at one of the forums in the Memorial Union last spring,” she said.

There will be time for public discussion at Wednesday’s hearing.

“We have had several people speak at the other two hearings,” Boone County Supervisor Mike O’Brien said. “We haven’t had any negative comments – it’s all been very supportive.”

Bugg said the ordinance is designed to deter alcohol being supplied to minors.

Recent consideration of a statewide keg registration by the Iowa Legislature would have no effect on the ordinance.
