This weekend couldn’t have gone better for the ISU gymnastics team.

On Friday, Iowa State (12-2, 4-0 Big 12 duals) defeated No. 22 Minnesota (8-4), 196.650 -195.175, posting a new team season-high score in the process.

On Sunday, they followed up Friday’s strong performance by beating No. 10 Nebraska (11-5-1, 2-2 Big 12 duals,), 196.250-196.125, ending Nebraska’s 60-meet home winning streak.

The last time Nebraska lost at home was 13 years ago on March 1, 1993.

Iowa State’s last win in Lincoln was Jan. 14, 1978.

To say the Cyclones are happy would be an understatement.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” junior Katie Lasher said. “I’m very happy because we did really well this weekend.”

Coach K.J. Kindler said she believes the weekend couldn’t have gone any better.

“It’s very satisfying,” she said. “For having a double weekend and the stress of traveling to a meet and all of that good stuff, the athletes handled the challenges really well this weekend.”

Sunday’s meet came down to the last event for the Cyclones – balance beam. After struggling throughout the season on beam despite Kindler’s belief that the beam should be their strongest event, Iowa State recorded beam scores of 49.250 on Friday and 49.100 on Sunday. The scores are the team’s two highest of the season.

Kindler said the beam routine is where she’s wanted success all season. She added that senior Laura-Kay Powell’s beam performance sealed the win for Iowa State against Nebraska.

“It came down to the last beam routine and L.K. [Powell] had a lot pressure on her,” Kindler said.

“She came through big for us because it came down to the very last dismount.”

Powell had her own take on what happened.

“I wouldn’t say it was turning point,” she said. “It was important that we hit our routines really well, but every event was important.”

Friday night’s meet had added significance for the Cyclones – it was Senior Night.

The team’s seniors were honored at the end of the meet with flowers and framed collages presented by their teammates and a video tribute created by Kindler to chronicle the team’s memories of the five seniors.

Kindler also honored the gymnasts with speeches as each senior paraded onto the floor with her family.

“It was an exciting time because we had our parents here and ended with our best score this year,” said senior Krystal Carney.

Junior Janet Anson said younger members of the team were glad they could help earn the highest team score of the year for the seniors.

“We were wanting to do something special for them and having a really good meet felt really good,” she said. “We’re really going to miss them. We’ve been with them since we came in as freshmen and it’s going to be really sad when it is their last meet.”

Anson had a strong performance of her own as she nailed a Yurchenko layout one-and-a-half twist on vault for a score of 9.975. With the score, she tied herself for the second-best vault in ISU gymnastics history.

Iowa State takes the floor again at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Tempe, Ariz., to take on No. 16 Arizona State.
