LETTER: Letter’s argument applies to GSB, too
March 30, 2006
In his March 28 letter regarding Campus Crusade for Christ, Jason Stanek, “Cru bylaws actually are discriminatory,” claims the organization engages in active discrimination because members are ineligible for certain roles within the organization if they are not “born again.”
What Stanek fails to mention is that according to his definition, many other organizations on campus also engage in such “active discrimination.” In particular, the Government of the Student Body is engaged in this type of discrimination – an organization of which Stanek is an active member.
Article V, Section B, Subsection 3 of the GSB Bylaws states that, “A student shall not seek or hold an office for a population of which the student is not a registered member.”
Because I am not a student in the College of Engineering, I am ineligible to be elected to GSB as a senator representing engineering. I believe that a majority of students on campus think that this is a reasonable requirement.
According to Stanek, GSB should also not be supported by student fees. Is there something wrong with this picture?
