CD REVIEW: The Veronicas

The Veronicas

“The Secret Lives Of .” (Sire Records)

Sounds like: Avril Lavigne, Good Charlotte, Ashlee Simpson

REVIEW: 1.5 / 5

In short: These two twins are too old to be singing about teenage drama, making a final product reminiscent of the Backstreet Boys and Avril Lavigne, only crappier.

Twenty-year-old identical twin sisters Jess and Lisa Origliasso, known in the music business as “The Veronicas,” have released their debut album, “The Secret Lives Of.” The “secret lives” that these two young Australians seem to possess is given away in the new release, if it wasn’t obvious from the start.

Throughout the album, it seems as if they are just using their twin appeal to try to get big and then complain about their lives over national radio. Their lyrics make them sound cocky, including lines such as “You’re a little obsessed with me,” – needy, and about 12 years old.

To follow suit, they formatted their album like any Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears album with a little Good Charlotte mixed in. The Veronicas’ first single sports the ever-so-clever title “4ever.” The rest of the album continues with cliche lyrics and bad beats.

The album slows down as it reaches the end and even contains a country-esque song entitled “Speechless.” The final song on the album, “Mother Mother,” is a poorly written song about – you guessed it – the girls’ mother.

The best song on the album is track nine, “Heavily Broke,” a mediocre song that is better executed than the rest. Although catchy at certain times, overall the album was too predictable and the lyrics were annoying.
