Jensen committed to communicating with student body

Government of the Student Body presidential candidate Emily Jensen is running a campaign based on raising student involvement in campus government.

Jensen, junior in political science, is running with Sara Faber, junior in public service and administration in agriculture. Jensen said her campaign with Faber focuses on better communication with the student body, which she said the current administration is lacking.

“I want to get GSB to announce themselves in class and let students know that if they have any problems to come talk to them,” Jensen said.

To communicate with students, Jensen and Faber said they plan to utilize open forum discussions and talk to student organizations. This will be done to make interaction with the students more beneficial and get ideas from students who may not participate in organizations or open forums, Jensen said.

In addition to increasing communication with student organizations, Jensen said she also wants to focus on their funding. She said this will be one of her first priorities if elected.

“I want to get the funding student organizations need and get their issues represented,” Jensen said.

The problem that arises with funding is that it is limited. Jason Carroll, GSB finance director and senior in civil engineering, said the limited amount allotted to student organizations poses the main problem in funding issues.

“You could get more money if students wanted to pay more,” he said.

He said if Jensen wanted to increase the amount of funding available she would have to increase student fees, because student organization funding comes directly from student fees.

Jensen said her plan is not to increase the overall amount of money available but to educate organizations on how obtain funding.

She said if more organizations begin to request more funding, there will be cuts from other organizations and, as a result, fund-raising may be needed.

She said athletic events would be a great opportunity for organizations to raise needed funds. To make this easier, Jensen and Faber said they hope to appoint someone to be in charge of coordinating these efforts.

Jensen is currently chief of staff for the executive cabinet and has served as director of student affairs in the past.

Faber is an off-campus senator and has been involved in other student organizations. She was president of the Block and Bridle Beef interest group and an ISU College of Agriculture ambassador.
