Six bands to play at MySpace event

Shannon Sanders

The increasinly popular MySpace Web site allows its users to obtain information about their favorite bands through the bands’ profiles. This weekend, however, MySpace bloggers will have a chance to listen to the bands they have become “friends” with online.

The House of Bricks will host its second MySpace Party on Friday, uniting bloggers with six bands that use MySpace to connect to their fans.

“I am personally psyched for the event – it is a great opportunity for both the local scene and MySpace to make advances in the area, as well as helping, on both accounts, to support local music,” said Rusty Anderson, senior in liberal studies and vocalist for local band Parallex.

Parallex is one of the bands playing on Friday. The band missed the first MySpace Party, and Anderson said they are excited to be a part of the event.

The six bands set to play for the show weren’t just scheduled, but specially chosen said Jesse Lizer, drummer for Parallex. Lizer said the band had to submit their material a while ago, which he said makes the event like a contest.

As much as the band is happy about being picked to play, it is also appreciative of MySpace for what it has done for their music.

“MySpace has done so much for us as well as the entire local music scene,” Anderson said.

“It also is a phenomenal tool when it comes to promoting shows and setting up shows in other cities. It helps to get away from big business and the media controlling what we hear. It sways away from all the all the Lindsay Lohans and Ashlee Simpsons of the world.”

Also joining Parallex are Omaha natives Right Side Impact. The newly formed band praises MySpace for their quickly rising fan base.

“It’s revolutionizing music as we know it. It’s so easy to access new bands – it’s basically taking place of the band Web site,” said Mike Clark, singer for Right Side Impact.

The bill for the show will also include Hindsight 20/20 for the early show and three different bands for the show after 9:30 p.m. The turnout is expected to be high, and those who print out a copy of their MySpace profile can get in for half the cost.

“With the names that are on the roster I think we are all expecting a great turnout. We all have good pull in Des Moines and on MySpace,” Anderson said of their local following and their 4,272 friends on MySpace. “And all of us being more of what I’d consider veterans of the scene with bands such as Hindsight, Pale Horse and ourselves.”

Many young people are dedicating many hours to sites such as MySpace. Whether it is finding new bands or old friends, to some it can have an addictive quality.

“It’s so easy to lose track of time on there,” Anderson said.

MySpace has quickly become one of the most popular Web sites around, with benefits including networking and advertising.

Matt McCue, guitarist for Parallex, said he agrees that MySpace is one of the best ways to reach fans online, and now, live.

“A lot of kids that come to shows have MySpace profiles. If you’re in a band, you have a MySpace profile,” he said. “It’s one of the best ways of advertising for bands, so it’s just kind of a way to use MySpace to the fullest.”
