Swimming and diving places sixth, breaks ISU records at Big 12 meet
February 27, 2006
COLUMBIA, Mo. – It’s always a good meet when a team breaks one or two school records.
The Cyclones broke seven -two in one event – finishing sixth in the Big 12 Championships with 357 points, just behind Nebraska. Texas dominated the meet and placed first with 942.5 points.
“I was very proud of the way that our women stood up and competed,” said coach Duane Sorenson.
On Saturday Iowa State started the night with Kim Rogers placing seventh in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.28. Maggie Peterson placed 11th in the event (2:03.44) and Lauren Breunig then placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (49.90), breaking her own school record.
That was just the beginning.
Lydia Smirniotis broke two school records, one of which was in the 1650 freestyle (16:49.68), in which she placed seventh. Smirniotis’ split at the 1000-yard mark was a school record, as well.
Marni Benson then swam a best in the 200 breaststroke, placing 10th (2:19.45).
Rogers ended her career at the conference meet with all-conference marks, placing third in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:02.
“It was fabulous for her to end her career like that,” Sorenson said.
Tami Ritchie placed eighth in the 200 butterfly (2:04.82) and Lindsay Wiesner placed 15th in the same event (2:10.05).
Haley Haynes placed sixth in the platform diving competition with 216.9 points.
“I was actually really excited,” Haynes said. “Tonight was a new personal best and it was only the second time I’d ever competed platform.”
Diving coach Jeff Warrick said he was impressed, as well.
“There can be a lot of pressure with it being their first time in a big meet atmosphere,” Warrick said.
“The girls handled themselves well. Haley [Haynes] making the finals competing in the platform for the first time in a meet was quite an accomplishment.”
On Friday, the Cyclones started off with a lifetime best 400 individual medley time and fifth-place finish by Rogers (4:20.45).
“I dropped like two seconds off of my best,” Rogers said. “I was super excited to still be dropping time and gain points for the team.”
In the 200 freestyle, Breunig was winning with 50 to go but ended second in a time of 1:48.22. Chelsey Walden placed 15th with a lifetime best time (1:52.89). In the 100 breaststroke, both Benson and Krista Fehl swam lifetime bests to finish ninth (1:04.12) and 10th (1:04.6), respectively. Ritchie placed 14th in the 100 butterfly (57.42). In the 100 backstroke, Peterson placed 10th (56.15), Lindsay Wegner placed 12th (57.96), Cassandra Nelson placed 13th (58.11) and Jamie Wieben placed 14th (58.22), despite battling with a bad back.
“I was really excited for Jamie [Wieben], with the back injury she has had for the last two years,” Sorenson said. “For her to score at this meet is fantastic.”
In the 200 freestyle relay, the last event on Friday, the Cyclones placed third in a time of 1:34.54.
The Cyclones compete again next week, when Haynes will compete in the NCAA Zone diving qualifications, which start March 10. She will compete in the one- and three-meter, and the platform.
