LETTER: Daily shares blame for student apathy
February 13, 2006
The following letter was online feedback to the Feb. 10 editorial, “GSB needs to stop playing house.”
I read very valid arguments in this editorial, but none of the criticisms were constructive. The Daily complains that the Government of the Student Body has not been visible to ISU students, yet as the most highly visible news source to students, it has not suggested anything to alleviate this problem.
Might I suggest that the Daily and GSB form a partnership to make everyone more aware of who GSB is, what it is doing and how it affects students. Articles such as “Meet your senator” would introduce everyone to who is on GSB and what their duties are. There could be weekly updates of what the agenda for GSB will be that week.
And finally, the Daily can tell people why they should attend these meetings. Major changes to student organization funding affecting students have happened that the Daily has never reported on. I am talking of how GSB voted to deny funding to student organizations that do no comply with the university non-discrimination policy.
I ask the Editorial Board to stop fooling itself. GSB is not the only one at fault here. The Daily needs to step up and start a partnership. It is complaining only for the sake of complaining and it is accomplishing nothing.
