Swimmers in fifth place after second day
February 24, 2006
COLUMBIA, Mo. -The ISU swimming and diving team set another school record and came close to setting two more while moving into fifth place ahead of the Nebraska Cornhuskers at the Big 12 Championships.
The Cyclones have 116 points and trail the third-place Missouri Tigers by 18 points. The Texas Longhorns have 347 points and lead the meet by a dominating 86 points.
Swimming coach Duane Sorenson said he was ecstatic about the performance of the 400 medley relay team, which placed second.
“I was very happy with the way we swam tonight,” Sorenson said. “Everyone improved their times, and the 400 medley relay team took second, which we have never done.”
The 400 medley relay team of Maggie Peterson, Marni Benson, Kim Rogers and Lauren Breunig touched the wall in a time of 3:44.29 to break the school record by two-and-a-half seconds.
Breunig placed sixth in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:01.73, which is an NCAA consideration time and was only two-tenths of a second off the school record. Haley Haynes placed seventh in the one-meter diving finals after placing fifth in the preliminaries.
Diving coach Jeff Warrick said he was proud of the way Haynes stayed composed and handled herself.
“Haley [Haynes] making the finals as a freshman was fantastic,” Warrick said. “I was really proud of her.”
Lydia Smirniotis placed 14th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:55.62, which was three seconds faster than her preliminary time, and Chelsey Walden placed 19th in that event with a time of 4:59.43.
Smirniotis said she took this event as a feeling-out process for later on in the meet.
“I took this as my morning swim, just kind of getting used to the pool and everything,” Smirniotis said. “It will help me for later on for my big race – the mile.”
In the other event of the night – the 50-meter freestyle – Cassandra Nelson placed 17th (24.14) and Jamie Wieben placed 22nd (24.63).
In addition to the events taking place Thursday, the Big 12 Swimming & Diving Tenth Anniversary Team was announced, and Kim Reid, who swam at Iowa State from 1998 to 1999, was selected to the team.
The Cyclones return to compete in seven events Friday and six events Saturday to close out the meet.
