Cyclone beauties, beasts share floor against Nebraska
February 20, 2006
As ISU gymnast Laura-Kay Powell was finishing a dynamic floor exercise performance, the 3,141 fans in attendance roared with an unusual fervor.
Surprised by the monstrous reaction, Powell smiled, before she realized the majority of the cheers were for ISU wrestler Jesse Sundell’s pinfall victory over Nebraska’s Patrick Aleksanyan at the exact same time, and began to laugh.
Such was the nature of Sunday’s “Beauty and the Beast” event, which featured Iowa State’s wrestling and gymnastics teams sharing the floor of Hilton Coliseum to compete in simultaneous meets against the University of Nebraska.
The unique event was brought to Iowa State by gymnastics coach K.J. Kindler.
“It was a great idea that I had known a few other gymnastics and wrestling programs were putting competitions together, and I was always interested in doing something like that,” she said. “We realized wrestling and gymnastics was there on the same weekend and I presented the wrestling staff with this idea and they were very supportive of it.”
The idea proved to be a rousing success, shattering all other previous ISU gymnastics attendance records.
“I thought ‘Beauty and the Beast’ went really well,” Kindler said. “We definitely capitalized off having additional fans here and hopefully introduced some people to the sport of gymnastics.”
Sophomore Jade Kvach said she believes the enhanced fan support helped propel No. 7 Iowa State (8-2, 3-0 Big 12) to victory over No. 8 Nebraska (8-4-1, 2-1 Big 12), 196.025-195.600.
“I think it was a lot of fun, not only for the athletes but for the fans,” Kvach said.
“I think there was a lot of stuff going on and it was really exciting for the fans to be able to watch two really exciting sports at Iowa State.”
Vault proved to be the decisive event for the Cyclones on Sunday, with the team earning a season-high score of 49.300.
“They stuck five out of six landings on vault and definitely set the tone for the meet,” Kindler said.
The gymnasts’ victory over Nebraska wasn’t the only strong performance of the weekend for the Cyclones. On Friday night, Iowa State trounced No. 19 Oregon State, 196.350-194.350, earning a new season-high team score in the process.
Uneven bars proved to be the top event Friday night, with the Cyclones attaining a season-high score of 49.225.
Senior Erin Dethloff set a new personal high score on uneven bars, posting a 9.900.
“I’ve been working a new dismount since my ankle surgery and this was the first time I was able to do it,” Dethloff said. “I’ve been training really hard to get it into my routine and it was really exciting that it paid off.”
Junior Ashley Alden also had a career night, setting a new personal high on balance beam with a score of 9.900.
This weekend’s victories extended the Cyclones home winning streak to 15, dating back to the 2004 season.
“All of us were ready for a home meet again, so we were all pumped up and ready to go this weekend,” Alden said.
