Cyclone basketball crushes Buffaloes 96-79
February 6, 2006
That’s more like it.
With Hilton Magic seemingly on life support, Cyclone guard Curtis Stinson injected a healthy dose of adrenaline and shook the home-court woes with an impressive 96-79 victory over Colorado and his first career triple-double.
“One of my coaches told me I was getting close, but I didn’t really think about it out on the court,” Stinson said. “It came in the flow of the game. That’s how I got hot in the first place, just playing in the flow.”
Stinson poured in 24 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds in what was only the third triple-double in ISU history, and the fifth in Big 12 history.
“I keep hearing about it but it hasn’t hit me yet,” Stinson said. “For a college player to have a triple-double, it really feels good. It means a lot for me because it shows that I played hard.”
It was the first triple-double for Iowa State since Jan. 8, 2000, when Jamaal Tinsley had 12 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists against Missouri.
It’s said that great players make those around them better, and that certainly seemed to be the case with Stinson’s performance on Sunday, with two other Cyclones notching double-doubles and a total of five ISU players notching double figures in scoring.
“Curtis [Stinson] is just a special, special player,” ISU coach Wayne Morgan said. “I have nothing but love for Curtis Stinson and I don’t have the adjectives to describe what he’s meant to our program.
“Anytime we can get a triple-double and two other double-doubles, I think we’ll have a chance to win.”
Shawn Taggart put up 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, while Rahshon Clark added 24 points and another career-high 14 rebounds, but it was Stinson’s show with 24 points, extending his run of 20-point games to five in a row.
“I saw [Stinson] there just playing ball like he always does,” Clark said. “I didn’t know he was close to a triple-double – he was just playing.”
It was on a Clark 3-pointer with 1:42 left to play that gave Stinson his 10th assist, clinching the triple-double.
Clark said by that time he knew Stinson was putting together something special.
“I knew that was going to be his 10th assist,” Clark said. “I told him if he got me the ball I’d make a shot to get him the assist. He got me the ball and I made it.”
The Hilton Coliseum crowd gave a loud ovation at Stinson’s removal from the game and the announcement of his triple-double, a nice present for the fans after 29 days between home victories.
“It feels great [to win at home],” Clark said.
“We lost three games in a row at home and we were tired of it. The fans were tired of it. We just came out with the fire and intensity that we weren’t going to lose.”
The Cyclones hit on all cylinders during the game, playing an effective pressure defense, out-rebounding the Buffaloes 46-39 and shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor in their best all-around performance of the conference season.
“When we played at Nebraska and the way we played tonight, that’s Cyclone basketball,” Morgan said.
“That’s what we’re preaching and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
The Cyclones play three of their next four games on the road starting with a date in Manhattan, Kan., against Kansas State on Wednesday.
Morgan and the team, however, are ready to take some time to enjoy this win before thinking about their next game.
“It’s really nice to win a home game so everybody’s really happy about that,” Morgan said. “I’m going to try and enjoy this one. I haven’t had a chance to enjoy one of these for a while, so I just want to soak in it.”
