LETTER: Draft of ‘principles’ ready for critique
February 1, 2006
From bigoted graffiti on university property to callous use of stereotypes and derogatory terms, ignorance and hate have shown themselves to be resilient even on college campuses.
In the past, the university administration and student groups have spoken out against this type of socially deviant and irresponsible behavior, but no systematic method for articulating and disseminating the values of ISU students had been developed.
Starting last fall, a group spearheaded by students dedicated significant amounts of time and effort to create a statement of principles that could provide the basis for judging and preventing such behaviors They also helped communicate and shape the social norms of students attending the university.
Yet for all the work these selfless people have done, success is dependent upon contributions and support from the rest of the ISU community.
A draft of the “Principles of Community” has been posted on the GSB Web site, along with implementation strategies for the principles. I encourage all students to read the draft and provide constructive comments regarding the contents.
It is only three pages of reading, and your input will greatly enhance the value of this project to the ISU community.
