LETTER: Regents’ Day aims to increase support
February 15, 2006
On Wednesday approximately 200 students, alumni, legislators and members of the Iowa Board of Regents will be participating in an event called Regents’ Day at the Capitol. The practical purpose of the event is to lobby the legislature to support additional funding for our universities.
Student lobbyists and other participants will be requesting this funding in order to keep tuition increases moderate and predictable, and to provide high-quality, affordable public education and research institutions for Iowa.
Additionally, the purpose of this day is to demonstrate that university students are active citizens and the future leaders of this state. Members of student organizations will be attending Regents’ Day as well, and will be displaying activities they are involved in and tasks they are accomplishing as student leaders. These groups range from Dance Marathon to the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Greek Community to Collegiate 4-H. They showcase the best of university academic programs, philanthropic endeavors and student leadership.
Regents’ Day at the Capitol is an initiative of ISU Ambassadors and the Government of the Student Body. These two organizations have taken a leading role to lobby for an increase in university funding and lower tuition. By doing this, GSB and ISU Ambassadors aim to positively represent and benefit the students of Iowa State.
