LETTER: Include employees in dining selection

This letter is in regard to the possible outsourcing of ISU Dining. We, as student workers, have become very discouraged as we continue to try to save ISU Dining. We’ve heard that ISU President Gregory Geoffroy wants a decision from the 22-person evaluation committee this week. This is troubling because we have yet to be heard by the administration, the Government of the Student Body or the Board of Regents.

We have been in contact with Gary Steinke, executive director for the Regents, since the second week of December in regard to meeting with Regent President Michael Gartner to discuss our concerns about the possible outsourcing of ISU Dining. As of last week, they have stopped communicating with us. As ISU students who pay the salary of the Regents, shouldn’t our voices be heard?

The next issue that bothers us is the fact that our own GSB president can’t find the time to meet with the students who elected her. Angela Groh is on the evaluation committee, presumably to represent the students. She has not attended any of the student ISU Dining meetings nor has she met with an ISU Dining Student employee to discuss our concerns about the possible outsourcing of ISU Dining. We continue to try to meet with her, but our e-mails have again gone unanswered.

This is frustrating, because if it is true that President Geoffroy wants a decision by the end of the week, the people making the decision have not taken the time to listen to the students.

It seems as if they are ignoring us and trying to come to a quick conclusion so they won’t have to meet with us. We are not asking for much, all we want is the truth and somebody to answer our simple questions.

Why are we going through this process when ISU Dining is not losing money? Why is ISU Dining ,and, in turn, the ISU student body, paying for this process?

Is this too much for paying students of Iowa State to ask?
