That one hurt.
The ISU women’s basketball team’s hopes for an NCAA tournament berth may have been dashed Saturday, falling to Kansas 57-56 in overtime.
Both teams struggled from the floor, but the Jayhawks survived Iowa State’s comeback bid and eventually overtook the Cyclones (15-9, 6-7 Big 12) in overtime.
“When you don’t make shots, you have no chance,” said ISU coach Bill Fennelly. “We had a lot of good looks at the basket, but we couldn’t make them.”
Iowa State appeared to be doomed when senior center Brittany Wilkins, who had 18 points in 25 minutes, fouled out with 2:39 remaining in the second half.
That came about a minute after junior Lyndsey Medders left the game with an ankle injury, and looked like she wouldn’t be returning.
She did return, however, and buried a 3-pointer with nine seconds left, tying the game.
Unfortunately for the Cyclones, that’s where the heroics ended. Medders missed a desperation layup as time expired in overtime, cementing the game. She finished the game with just seven points.
The right ankle injury sustained in the second half was on the same foot as her sprain, but is a different injury.
“The good news is it was not my foot, which is what I was worried about when I fell on it,” Medders said. “It was just an ankle roll . hopefully I’ll be OK for Monday’s practice.”
Not surprisingly, she made no excuses for Iowa State’s loss.
“We need every win we can get, and we lost at home again,” Medders said. “That doesn’t sit well.”
Still, Iowa State knows it has a slim window for postseason play – with that comes a slim margin for error. Missouri, Texas A&M and Colorado remain on its schedule.
“We just have to find a way to bounce back; we can’t lose hope,” Wilkins said. “We know how to win.”
Fennelly said Iowa State’s biggest adjustment needs to be in capitalizing on its chances.
“The chances that we had were early in the game,” Fennelly said. “If we made a couple more shots, we’d be up by eight or 10 points. At halftime, they only had 18 points, but we only had 24, and that was an opportunity to be up 10, 12 or 14 points. It didn’t get much better in the second half.”
Wilkins led the Cyclones with 18 points. Freshman Nicky Wieben added 14, and sophomore Lisa Bildeaux logged her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Iowa State was a combined 3-for-23 from beyond the arc, with its guards shooting 2-for-19. Medders, Megan Ronhovde and Heather Ezell combined to total just 14 points.
“It’s tough because our big players are playing really well right now,” Medders said. “Our guard core, myself, Ronhovde and Ezell – we’re not shooting the ball well right now.
“When you lose a game like this, the responsibility falls on you. You need to look yourself in the mirror, take responsibility for it and get back in the gym. [Our numbers] are pathetic for Division 1 play.”
