Tennis team can’t reverse Big 12 slide
February 27, 2006
Chrissy Derouin and Danielle Uscinski continued their unbeaten streak Friday night against No. 33 Texas A&M before bad weather forced the Cyclones to default Saturday’s match to Texas.
Derouin and Uscinski defeated A&M’s Seva Iwinski and Rachel Wagner 8-6 for their second Big 12 win this season and third overall.
The Cyclones, however, were swept by the Aggies for the fourth time in the last four meetings, 7-0.
Singles matches continually find the Cyclones overmatched, as the closest match was on the No. 6 court between Iwinski and Iowa State’s Eve Soriano. Iwinski defeated Soriano 7-5, 6-3. Cyclone Jill Palen fought back after being overwhelmed in the first set against No. 67 Anna Lubinsky, but Lubinsky put her away in the second set for a final of 6-1, 6-4.
Saturday’s weather spelled relief for the Cyclones on the court, forcing them to default all the matches and points to the Longhorns.
Only singles matches were started before the weather suspended play, but there were some developments. On the No. 2 court, Kara Hickey trailed 4-5 and on the No. 1 court, Palen had lost the first set, but was leading the second set before the Cyclones defaulted, leaving her score at 2-6, 3-0.
The weekend drops the Cyclones to 0-4 on the season, and 0-3 in the conference. Dating back to 2003, the Cyclones have now lost their 36th consecutive Big 12 regular season match.
The Cyclones next step on the court Friday at home against the University of Illinois-Chicago.
