Bowled Over
January 19, 2006
For students who have seen “Kingpin” and thought “Man, I wish I could be as cool as Roy Munson when I go bowling,” their chance has arrived.
The upcoming intramural team bowling competition gives students the opportunity to channel their inner Munson.
The contest will be held throughout February at the Memorial Union Recreation Center.
Teams will consist of four people, in any combination of males and females, and each team will bowl three games on a single date. Registration opens Monday and closes Feb. 1, and must be done online. As an added bonus, team bowling is free to enter because it is paid for by ISU Recreation Services.
Linda Marticke, intramural sports programs coordinator, said she believes team bowling is one of the more accessible intramurals, and points out the 184 teams that competed last year as evidence.
“It is more laid-back than other intramurals. You see more laughing and people enjoying themselves,” she said.
Kellie Tholen, senior in agronomy, is one of last year’s champions.
Her co-rec (mixed gender) team, the Gutter Girls, came together at the last minute.
“My boyfriend participated in place of a roommate who couldn’t,” she said.
“We weren’t expecting to win, so it was a nice surprise that we did.”
Because of the flighted structure of the competition, even average bowlers have a chance to win an intramural champion T-shirt.
A flighted competition means the teams will be grouped together by score, and the top team in each group wins a T-shirt. Teams will also be grouped together by the male-female ratio in each group.
“It’s not just the best teams that win T-shirts, because it’s a flighted competition.” Marticke said. “Everyone has a chance to win.”
Rusty Lord, senior in meteorology, enjoys the team aspect of the competition. Last year his team – AMS1 – was the co-rec division champion.
“I enjoyed it a lot,” he said. “It’s hard to find individuals who can bowl well, and luckily I had some good teammates.”
As for being an intramural champion, Lord said it was a culmination of a long journey for him.
“It feels pretty good to be a champion,” he said.
“It was the first intramural T-shirt I’ve ever won after losing in overtime in the finals of the intramural basketball tournament, so I was pretty happy to win.”
Marticke said she hopes to have a number of new faces try team bowling this year.
“It’s something you can do with friends,” Marticke said. “You don’t have to be a good bowler. You can just show up and have a fun, relaxing time.”
