Cyclone wrestlers split Oklahoma matches
January 30, 2006
Ninth-ranked ISU wrestling had mixed success on their Oklahoma road trip, beating the eighth-ranked Sooners, 19-16, before falling to second-ranked Oklahoma State, 26-14.
Nate Gallick and the Cyclones (10-4, 1-0 in the Big 12) opened conference play with a win in Norman on Saturday. The senior captain beat rival Teyon Ware, 4-3, handing the defending national champ his first official loss of the season.
Gallick (24-0) now holds a career record of seven wins and one loss against Ware.
“I hope to see [Ware] two mores times this season, at the Big 12 Championships and in the NCAA finals,” Gallick said. “We have a history and today we both wanted the win. It was definitely a match the fans were looking forward to.”
Jesse Sundell (14-11) picked up 11-3 major decision victory over Oklahoma’s (7-4-1, 0-2) Trey Blakely, and David Bertolino upset 13th-ranked Wes Roberts, 6-5.
“It was a great win,” said coach Bobby Douglas. “This is the best we have wrestled all year. Gallick’s match was one for the books, Bertolino’s upset of Roberts – our guys wrestled very well today.”
Sunday in Stillwater, Gallick’s tech fall and Kurt Backes’ pin highlighted the Cyclones effort in the loss to the Cowboys (12-1, 3-0). The three-time defending national champions won seven matches in the dual.
