Keg registration could become a reality, should the Story County Board of Supervisors pass the keg ordinance Thursday.

FASTTRAK

Last we knew: The Story County Board of Supervisors drafted a proposed keg registration ordinance. The board approved the ordinance after its first two public readings.

The Latest:The final read and vote will take place 7 p.m. Thursday to determine if the keg ordinance will become law.

What’s next: If passed, the law will require a photo ID with the current name, address and identification number when an individual purchases a keg in Story County.

The board will conduct a third and final public reading of the keg ordinance at 7 p.m. Thursday in the City Council Chambers at Ames City Hall, 515 Clark Ave. After the public reading, the supervisors will vote on whether to make it a law.

Should the ordinance pass Thursday, it will take effect in 60 days, on March 20.

According to the ordinance, its purpose is to make it easier to identify individuals who provide keg alcohol to minors. When an individual buys a keg of alcohol, he or she will need to provide a current government-issued photo identification. The seller will log the name, address, individual identification number and keg identification, along with the date of the sale.

Supervisor Don Toms said keg registration would reduce county-wide underage drinking.

“[Keg registration] was never intended to be directed at college students. It is intended for all underage drinking,” he said. “We need to hold those responsible for obtaining beer for underage drinkers.”
