Motorcycle driver not badly hurt in accident

A pickup truck collided with a motorcycle on the eastern side of campus Wednesday, sending the motorcyclist to the hospital and delaying traffic.

The driver of a black Honda motorcycle turned left from Wallace Road toward Osborn Drive and entered the path of a red Chevrolet 1500 pickup.

“It appears the truck was southbound,” said ISU Police Lieutenant Steve Hasstedt. “The motorcycle was going west and turned in front of the truck.”

Traffic was rerouted at the intersection around 11 a.m. Wednesday for about 45 minutes.

Kari Entriken, junior in management information systems, was close to the accident when it happened. She was on her way back to her apartment when the accident occurred.

“I was fairly close,” she said. “I was approaching the corner.”

She said both drivers were trying to beat a yellow light, but that the pickup driver may have been speeding.

“The guy in the red truck was going a little bit faster than he should’ve,” she said.

She said after the driver of the motorcycle was thrown, he landed on his back and screamed.

“He pretty much hit right on his back,” she said. “He was in lots of pain.”

Police did not release the name of the motorcycle driver or extent of his injuries, but they did not appear to be life threatening.

“He’s at the hospital, and he’ll be OK,” said ISU Police Officer Steven Oakland.

He said injuries could have been much worse had the driver not been wearing a helmet.

“It’s a good deal he had a helmet,” Oakland said.
