Swimming and diving team falls to Missouri
January 23, 2006
The ISU swimming and diving team won its last three events, but the hole it was put in by the Missouri Tigers was too much to overcome. The Tigers (2-2-1, 1-2-1 Big 12) won the first four events – and ten overall – to defeat the Cyclones (3-2, 0-1) in their Big 12 opener on Friday 169-126.
Despite the loss, coach Duane Sorenson said he thought the Cyclones swam well.
“I was very happy with the way we swam overall,” Sorenson said. “Our times were much faster than last week, and some of our times were better than our Iowa meet.”
Iowa State was shorthanded, as junior Lauren Breunig was ill and not able to compete at her full ability. Breunig did compete in the 200 medley relay and the 100 freestyle, helping the Cyclones with two second place finishes, and also placed third in the 200 freestyle.
Freshman Kali Fryklund was injured on her first dive of the 1M competition and was unable to compete for the rest of the night. Fryklund hit her head on the diving board while attempting her first dive and was taken away on a stretcher. Details about her condition were not known at the time of publication.
Two freshman Cyclones, Marni Benson and Haley Haynes, each won two events.
Benson won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.76 and the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.74. She is now third on the all-time list at Iowa State in the 100 breaststroke and fourth on the all-time list in the 200 breaststroke.
“I was very happy with the way I swam tonight,” Benson said. “I have been working hard all season, and my times have been coming on meet by meet.”
Sorenson said he was happy as well.
“Marni Benson probably had the meet of her life, swimming two lifetime bests,” he said.
Haynes won both the 1M and 3M diving competitions, earning 256.87 points on the 1M board and 294.83 on the 3M.
“I thought I dove really well on the three-meter,” Haynes said. “I was a little upset on the 1M and a little shaken by what happened to Kali, but I was very happy with the 3M performance.”
Senior Kim Rogers won the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:30.03 and placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:05.14) and the 200 backstroke (2:06.59). The latter two were season best times, Sorenson said. The team of Maggie Peterson, Cassandra Nelson, Tami Ritchie and Lindsay Wegner picked up the other Iowa State victory in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:38.35.
Junior Chelsey Walden placed second in both the 500 freestyle (5:05.54) and the 1000 freestyle (10:21.91).
“Chelsey Walden had a very good meet,” Sorenson said.
The Cyclones travel to Omaha, Neb. for a triangular meet with Northern Colorado and Nebraska-Omaha on Friday before challenging Nebraska in Lincoln on Saturday.
