GRIDIRON: Horned Frogs put up a near-perfect season
December 9, 2005
Perhaps the best team in the nation no one has paid any attention to is Texas Christian University.
A 10-1 overall mark and an undefeated record in the Mountain West conference play has led the Horned Frogs to a No. 14 ranking. TCU beat Oklahoma in its opener and is a loss to SMU away from being a BCS spoiler.
TCU 17, Oklahoma 10
TCU opened its season with the first big upset of 2005, with a 17-10 win over then-No. 5 Oklahoma. Running back Robert Merrill scored with 11:56 to play, putting the Horned Frogs up for good. Quarterback Tye Gunn threw for 226 and a score in the huge upset.
SMU 21, TCU 10
It was the one game that has kept TCU out of the national spotlight this season, the only blemish on an otherwise perfect campaign. In a let-down game after the huge victory over Oklahoma, SMU handed the Horned Frogs their only loss of the season, 21-10. Gunn was intercepted three times and the TCU offense failed to find the end zone, with its only touchdown coming on a kickoff return.
TCU 23, Utah 20 OT
TCU got back in the win column – a place they would not leave again – with a close overtime win over Utah. Michael DePriest caught a four-yard pass from Gunn in overtime to give TCU the win. Freshman running back Aaron Brown had a huge game for the Horned Frogs, rushing for 168 yards on 17 carries.
TCU 51, BYU 50 OT
It was an offensive slugfest for TCU against BYU, as both teams scored almost at will. It was one mishandling of the football, however, that allowed the Frogs to top BYU. After scoring a touchdown in overtime, BYU misplayed the extra point snap, leaving the door open for the Frogs. Cory Rogers scored on TCU’s overtime possession and the extra point was good to give the Frogs the win. Gunn left the game with an injury and was replaced by junior Jeff Ballard, who tossed two touchdown passes.
TCU 49, New Mexico 28
An injured quarterback didn’t stop TCU, who rode backup Ballard to a 49-28 win over New Mexico. Ballard rushed for four touchdowns and threw for two more. TCU opened up a 28-0 lead, but gave up 28 unanswered points before putting the game away in the third quarter. Brown put together his second consecutive 100-yard game, rushing for 129 yards.
TCU 28, Wyoming 14
The TCU offense struggled in its 28-14 win over Wyoming, but was still able to come up with its fifth win of the season. Robert Henson returned a fumble for a score in the third quarter to put things out of reach.
TCU 38, Army 17
TCU made itself bowl eligible after a one year absence, beating Army 38-17 on Homecoming. Ballard tossed two touchdown passes and rushed for two more, continuing his impressive play in the absence of starting quarterback Tye Gunn. The Frogs outscored Army 24-7 in the second half, after leading 14-10 at halftime.
TCU 48, Air Force 10
The Horned Frogs made their first appearance in the top-25 this season, sporting a No. 21 ranking against Air Force. TCU piled up 220 yards on the ground and 326 in the air, in an impressive 48-10 win. Ballard had his first 300-yard game, thanks in part to hitting receiver Cory Rogers six times for 128 yards.
TCU 23, San Diego State 20
In what would prove to be the final close game of the regular season, TCU came out on top of San Diego State, 23-20. TCU did its damage on the ground, rushing for 291 yards as a team behind a 170-yard game from Merrill. His second touchdown of the game in the third quarter gave TCU a lead they would never give back.
TCU 33, Colorado State 6
The Horned Frogs’ defense came through, holding Colorado State to just 59 yards rushing in their ninth win of the season.
Texas Christian allowed just two Colorado State field goals, leading 24-6 at half and adding nine third quarter points to put the game away.
TCU 51, UNLV 3
TCU saved its biggest beat-down for the final regular season game, hanging 51 points on UNLV.
The Rebels managed just six first downs and five rushing yards against the Horned Frog defense, while TCU put up nearly 600 yards of offense.
Brown rushed for 105 yards and three scores to end the season in convincing fashion.
