ISU student struck by bus on Pammel Drive

An ISU student struck by a bus while crossing Pammel Drive was airlifted Tuesday night to a hospital in Minnesota.

A call was placed to 911 at 5:30 p.m. of a report of a pedestrian being struck by traffic. The victim, a 21-year-old male, was struck by a Midwest Transportation Services Bus driven by 32-year-old Boone resident Christy Jo Elliot on or near the crosswalk closest to the Molecular Biology Building.

The road was blocked by police for an hour during that time.

The victim was transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center, 111 Duff Ave., from the scene of the accident.

A few hours later, he was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.

Bowers said this was primarily because of his condition, but St. Paul is also where he and his family are from.

Because of patient confidentiality agreements, Mary Greeley officials could not comment on the patient’s condition.

“The victim darted out from between the two vehicles out into the bus that struck him,” Capt. Rob Bowers of the ISU Police Department.

“We don’t know at this point in time whether he was in the crosswalk or not.”

Bowers said it is unknown how fast the bus was traveling, although the bus had a green light.

The bus driver was returning to the Midwest Coaches Inc. offices at 1501 E. Lincoln Way.

Bowers also said the driver was not impaired.

“We have no reason to believe alcohol was a factor,” he said.

ISUPD will have accident reconstructionists on site during the next few days and will be interviewing witnesses to learn more.

Capt. Gene Deisinger will coordinate the effort, Bowers said.

Bowers said he could not easily recall any previous accidents of that nature in that area of campus. Further details were not immediately available.
