Iowa State’s defense showed up for just two series’ in this offensive display, but it was enough to expose Kansas State’s pitiful rush defense.
The Wildcats had no answer for ISU tailback Stevie Hicks, who carried 23 times for 242 yards and three touchdowns.
The Cyclones had quickly jumped up 28-7 when Kansas State started to climb back in the game.
A late first half touchdown, coupled with a touchdown on their first drive of the second, half propelled the Wildcats to within seven points in the third quarter.
That’s when both defenses stopped playing.
The Cyclones quickly responded with a 23-yard touchdown run from quarterback Bret Meyer to increase their lead 35-21, but again, Kansas State pulled within seven, compliments of an 81-yard pass from quarterback Allan Evridge to receiver Jermaine Moreira. Meyer responded, hitting tight end Walter Nickel in the back of the end zone to put the Cyclones up 42-28.
Strong safety Nik Moser intercepted Evridge’s pass on the next drive, icing the Wildcats, and the Cyclones would go on to win the game, 49-35.
Meyer was 12-of-15 on the day, for 283 yards and two touchdowns. In addition to Meyer and Hicks’ rushing touchdowns, fullback Ryan Kock punched one in as well.
Receiver Todd Blythe had another productive day at wideout, catching four passes for 102 yards. Jon Davis caught three for 114 yards. In addition to his three rushing touchdowns, Hicks caught an eight-yard screen pass, bringing his total touchdowns to four for the game.
The Cyclones outgained the Wildcats in yards 545-478. Kansas State exposed Iowa State’s shaky secondary, gaining 462 yards through the air, but managed only 16 yards on the ground.
