Cyclone women cruise past Grand View, 94-55
November 14, 2005
It looked like David vs. Goliath as the ISU women’s basketball team completed its exhibition season with a 94-55 win over Grand View on Sunday afternoon.
Grand View has just one player over 6 feet tall, and it showed. Iowa State outrebounded the Vikings, 63-27, and recorded six blocks. With such a disadvantage in height, Grand View was forced to play a zone defense throughout the game, and it was the Cyclones’ perimeter game that made the difference, as they knocked down 17 three-pointers.
Grand View’s Ashley Brown led all scorers with 32 points. Iowa State’s Heather Ezell led the Cyclones, shooting 7-of-17 for 21 points. They were all three-pointers.
“It felt good, and I felt like I was in a rhythm,” Ezell said. “I’m starting to feel like I’m almost completely in shape.”
The Cyclones scored 26 points off of 14 Grand View turnovers, and outscored the Vikings 32-10 in the paint. Collectively, Iowa State shot 40 percent from the field, compared to Grand View’s 35.6 percent.
Although the Cyclones had the Vikings completely outmatched, coach Bill Fennelly said it is important for Iowa State to focus on its upcoming regular season games.
“Now it’s time to go, and I think our kids understand that,” Fennelly said. “We have a better idea of what kind of team we have, and we have a better idea of stuff that we need to work on.”
The Cyclones used a 26-8 run early in the first half to grab a commanding lead and never looked back. Their 57-31 halftime lead was even a big enough cushion for all five freshmen – Ezell, Amanda Nisleit, Gillian Bjerke, Nicky Wieben and Rachel Pierson – to take the court together midway through the second half.
“It wasn’t by design, it just kind of happened the way substitutions go,” Fennelly said. “I wanted to get them as much time as we could.”
Fennelly said trying to find the right combinations on the court will be a long process for the team – one that may not be figured out even as the season wraps up.
“I don’t think this is a team, even in March, that you can say, ‘Here’s your five, here’s your first sub,” he said. “I might be wrong; I just don’t see this team doing that because of a lack of experience and a lack of maturity in some ways.”
A level of consistency, though, is something the Cyclones were hoping to find through its two preseason games, and senior Brittany Wilkins provided some of that Sunday, tallying 18 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and one steal.
“I just went out there with the mindset of giving it my best shot every time,” Wilkins said.
