DVD Release: “Margaret Cho – Assassin”

Dante Sacomani

Starring: Margaret Cho< /br>

Run Time: 85 minutes

Rating for extras: 3 out of 5

Synopsis: One of comedy’s fiercest left-wing weapons, Margaret Cho, is back for another concert film sure to outright piss off anyone who can even see a point in a conservative argument. The aptly titled “Assassin” sees Cho hit on topical subjects such as gay marriage, women’s rights, militant Christians and all the lovely things in between.

Short Films: The DVD has two short films, “Ode to Margaret Cho” and “Invisible Son.” Neither are especially funny or clearly focused, but they are strange enough to keep them interesting, even if the viewer is left with only one thought: “What the hell was that?”

Featurettes: “The Making of Assassin: Inside the Mind of Margaret Cho,” is a 40-minute documentary about the social impact Cho has had since her rise to popularity. Be warned, however – this might be a little too much for the average fan as it frequently drifts into over-glorification territory.

The excessive length and repetitive nature keeps it from being interesting for anyone other than Cho’s most hardcore fans and the people involved in its making.

Also featured on the DVD is a six-minute feature on Cho’s belly dancing hobby and an animated rap video. The two have more in common than meets the eye – they aren’t funny or interesting.

Opening Act: This makes the extras worth browsing. It gives the viewer a chance to see Cho’s friend and opening act Bruce Daniels’ set filmed before Cho’s “Assassin” performance. Daniels, an openly gay black man who has a style similar to Cho’s, uses material that focuses on the religious right and the rights of gay Americans and is outright hilarious.
