The master soundsetters responsible for bringing you a nice serving of indie rock week after week have done it again – “Music from The OC: Mix 5” is now available for fans and non-fans to rekindle their favorite Southern California moments.

Although the series has only been on Fox for three years, it has managed to score five compilation albums – a little bizarre considering it’s a television show. The people over at “The OC,” however, aren’t mass producing songs that would only be worthy of compilations like “Now that’s What I Call Music 110.”

This music is up and coming. This music is trendy. This music is good. And that’s why even “The OC: Mix 20” will still probably be worth listening to. On the most recent release, the listener will find refreshing, eclectic bands on the verge of or just tipping over success.

A swirling variety of sounds encompass the disc: everything from the dance party disco funk of LCD Soundsystem’s “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House” to the fuzzy guitars in Of Montreal’s “Requiem for O.M.M.” and the slick, sophisticated pop of Stars’ “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead.”

The only song not worthy of sharing the spotlight with the rest is the most recognizable tune from “The OC,” “California.” Phantom Planet has reworked the original song into an acoustic, mellowed-out downer that should never exist.

Unlike the past four releases, “Mix 5” doesn’t really include a major success act like the formers did with Modest Mouse, the Killers, Jet, etc. But that’s not a problem here. In fact, maybe it’s refreshing.
