LETTER: GSB leadership blocking progress

The Government of the Student Body is ignored and enigmatic to much of the student body. Why is this? Much of it probably stems from the major public interaction it has is the senate meetings which are long, esoteric and people often get lost in inane and inconsistent application of the meeting rules otherwise known as parliamentary procedure.

What is amazing is how many power struggles exist within the senate. One of the main goals is to be the piggy bank of some of those student fees that almost magically appear every semester. Sorry about that, but we try to keep them reasonable. These power grabs by the senate leadership have had a detrimental effect on the ability of the senate to fully operate in the students’ interest.

A recent bill on Campustown was passed by 92 percent of the senate, but we were only able to vote on it after having to overrule the senate leadership, which would not even let us discuss the bill. Fighting these power grabs takes time and wastes money. Now the senate leadership wants to hand out censures to senators. This would do nothing but let us know they are upset.

Let’s hope the leadership quits wasting time and let the students who were elected do their job. Quit censoring our ability to debate and start being a service and not an impediment.
