Unarmed robber strikes Greater Iowa Credit Union
October 3, 2005
The Greater Iowa Credit Union, 801 E. Lincoln Way, was robbed Monday morning, shortly after the bank opened.
Ames Police Cmdr. Randy Kessel said it appeared a man entered the bank and asked for an undetermined amount of cash before leaving the area on foot with the loot. The suspect was described as white, approximately 6 feet tall, mid-30s, medium to heavy build, wearing a baseball hat, light-colored long-sleeve shirt and blue jeans.
Kessel said the man was unarmed and there were no injuries.
“This can occur and does occur,” Kessel said of a weaponless robbery. “As long as you put someone in fear, either by presence or voice or threat of injury, the threat is good enough.”
Amy Juhnke, director of marketing and public relations for the bank, said employees are trained on how to handle robberies.
“We are pleased at how our employees handled the situation, and the fact that nobody got hurt is a testament to our great employees,” she said.
The Credit Union’s Lincoln Way office will remain closed until further notice, but other Credit Union locations in Ames will stay open – 2623 Northridge Parkway and 110 Airport Road.
The FBI was called in to help investigate and it remains under investigation, Kessel said. Police are attempting to track down any witnesses, including employees and customers. If anyone has any information regarding this crime, police urge them to call the Ames Police Department at (515) 239-5133.
