An early-morning apartment fire prompted an evacuation at Legacy Towers, 119 Stanton Ave., on Saturday night.

Legends American Grill, which occupies the seventh floor of the building, was also evacuated shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.

A manager at Legends, Channing Thyberg, said the fire occurred in an apartment on the sixth floor of the building between 12:30 a.m. and 12:45 a.m.

“The whole building was evacuated,” she said.

Ev Cochrane and Associates, which owns the building, could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Little information about the incident – such as cause, damage or injuries – was released Sunday by the Ames Fire Department.

Todd Moomaw, firefighter, said the call was received at 1 a.m., and said further information would be released on Monday.

A patron of Legends Bar and Grill at the time of the incident, Jason Junge, senior in civil engineering, said after being evacuated, he saw smoke coming out of an apartment window on the opposite, north side of the building from Legends.

He said a crowd gathered in the street after the incident, although Junge and his friends left shortly after being evacuated.

Thyberg said people were allowed back into the building Sunday morning. Legends – which had only a few tables and one side of the bar open when the evacuation occurred – did not open again Saturday night, but was open for business as usual on Sunday.

Thyberg said she didn’t anticipate business would be affected by the fire. She said Legends management had not been informed of the cause as of Sunday afternoon.
