Council gets student input on Campustown

Members of the Ames City Council attended the Government of the Student Body meeting Wednesday night in an effort to gather student input regarding the future of Campustown.
Though no initiatives were discussed for changes to occur in Campustown, members of GSB voiced their opinions about how to improve the area.
“I think we need to take into consideration the under-21 crowd,” said Greg Bonett, junior in electrical engineering and off-campus senator.
Although Bonett said he’d like to see younger students have more options in Campustown, he didn’t want to disturb existing businesses.
“The establishments that are currently there have a consistent clientele and seem to be doing well,” Bonett said. “We shouldn’t be trying to drive them out.”
Other senators said they agreed with Bonett and said they saw a need to provide more entertainment for those under 21.
The idea of having free wireless Internet in more locations, such as that which already exists at Stomping Grounds, 303 Welch Ave., was also discussed and supported by both at-large City Council member Matthew Goodman and a few GSB members.
“If improvements are made, we would like to have as much input as possible from students in the process,” said Tony Borich, ex-officio City Council student liaison.
Noah Wiese, Campustown representative, said the current condition of Campustown should not be a major concern.
“The students that I have talked to don’t seem to think that there needs to be a lot of changes,” said Weiss, graduate student in materials science and engineering. “There is room for improvement, but we should make it clear that we don’t want to change Campustown fundamentally.”
Ames City Manager Steve Schainker spoke briefly about the condition of Campustown, discussing the condition of the sidewalks, a concern raised by off-campus senator Gabriel Whitaker, senior in public service and administration in agriculture.
Schainker charged Campustown businesses with the responsibility of keeping sidewalks clean.
