Soccer team beats Jayhawks, defeating defending champ
October 2, 2005
Two goals in 45 seconds helped the ISU women’s soccer team exact revenge on Kansas on Sunday afternoon and come out of the weekend with a winning record in the Big 12.
The Cyclones not only survived against two of the best teams the conference has to offer, but beat the defending conference champion Jayhawks 3-1 after tying Missouri in double-overtime Friday night, 1-1.
Amy Flores scored three goals in the two games for Iowa State (7-3-3, 2-1-1 Big 12), including back-to-back goals to startle Kansas. The win ended a six-game losing streak to the Jayhawks, a stretch that included the Cyclones’ final two losses last season.
“It was a great team effort,” said coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “We executed and created and communicated and did everything to put together the best team effort to this point this season.”
Flores headed in all three of her goals this weekend, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 second half lead against the Tigers (6-4-2, 1-2-1) and a commanding 2-0 lead against the Jayhawks (5-5-2, 1-2-1).
After tying on Friday, goalkeeper Joanna Haig and the ISU defense made the plays it needed against Kansas to preserve the victory, and Meghan Smith scored with less than 10 minutes left to put it away.
“Obviously, this was huge for momentum,” Flores said. “Every win is big in the Big 12, but we have so much respect for Kansas. They are a great team, but we came out, fought hard and got it done today.”
Kansas beat the Cyclones 4-1 in the Big 12 Tournament last year and shut them out in a 4-0 regular season win.
The Jayhawks ended the season as co-conference champions with Texas A&M.
“I knew that when we went up in the first half that they would keep coming at us,” Hornbacher said.
“Joanna was so huge for us.”
Haig had six saves, including a blocked penalty kick midway through the first half. Iowa State was outshot 21-12.
“We really wanted to keep that lead going into halftime,” Haig said.
“We scored those two goals, and I knew we still had to keep them off the board. It was a good cushion, but no lead in soccer is good enough.”
After being on the defensive to start the game, the first two Cyclone shots found the back of the net.
Jess Villhauer hit a corner kick across the box to Flores, and Flores jumped and headed it past the Jayhawk goalkeeper for the first goal.
After the kickoff, Erin Witte won the ball, streaked up the right side of the field, kicking a cross into the win across the field to Flores, who knew what to do from there.
“We got a phenomenal effort out of Amy Flores,” Hornbacher said.
“She has been in the right place at the right team – she has a nose for the goal. She finds a way to get in position and redirect the ball. She came up so big this weekend.”
The win helped Iowa State overcome the disappointment of the tie against Missouri. The Tigers scored with 13 minutes left in the game, and despite outshooting the Cyclones 7-2, couldn’t score in the two overtime periods.
