The Iowa State Cyclones were left wondering “what if?” once again.

After starting in a 14-0 hole just over eight minutes into the game the

Cyclones battled back and built a 10-point fourth-quarter lead before falling 27-24 in overtime to Missouri.

“We made plays, the offense executed well and we ran the ball well, but in the end we came up a play short,” ISU coach Dan McCarney said. “So it’s very disappointing. This sure doesn’t feel like a 3-3 football team right now, it feels a lot better than that.”

Iowa State moved the ball well on its opening drive before punting, but the next two possessions didn’t go as well for the Cyclones.

Missouri’s William More intercepted a Bret Meyer pass and returned it 62-yards for a touchdown with just over seven minutes to play in the first-quarter. Then, just two plays later, Xzavie Jackson returned a Jason Harris fumble 14-yards for a score and the Tigers led 14-0 halfway through the first.

Just when it looked like the rout was on, Iowa State came up with a 70-yard touchdown drive, part of 24 unanswered points by the Cyclones.

Iowa State contained Tiger quarterback Brad Smith all day, holding him to 45-yards passing and 39-yards rushing before knocking him out of the game in the fourth-quarter.

Freshman Chase Daniel relieved Smith and led the Tigers on a 73-yard drive ending in a field goal that made the score 24-17.

After an Iowa State punt with 2:32 to play, Daniel summoned some Homecoming magic and led Missouri on an 11-play 87-yard touchdown drive to tie the game with 20 seconds left.

“Give credit to Gary Pinkel and his team,” McCarney said. “They showed a lot of heart and hung in there and won it in overtime.”

Iowa State missed a 42-yard field goal to open the overtime period, before Sean Coffey kicked a 26-yard field goal, his third of the game to win it for the Tigers.
