Absence of leadership could end ISU Greens

The ISU campus Green Party may dissolve because of a lack of leadership, said a former president of the organization.

Jo Simpson, president of the ISU Campus Greens during the 2004-05 academic year, said the members weren’t sure they would continue the organization.

Simpson, graduate student in interdisciplinary graduate studies, said she was no longer very involved with the group, because her studies didn’t allow her the time.

Camomilia Bright, graduate student in geological and atmospheric studies and treasurer for the club, said leadership was an issue within the group.

“Although students do come to events and are interested in the issues, there does appear to be a lack of desire to take leadership roles in the ISU Campus Greens,” she said.

She said the students didn’t take leadership roles because those interested in the campus Green Party were also involved in other groups and didn’t have time for an “umbrella organization, which deals with a wide variety of issues.”

Roger Bentley, adviser for the organization and academic adviser for electrical and computer engineering, said he didn’t know where the group stood on dissolving.

He said he asked the group to relieve him of his duties, and he didn’t know if there was a new adviser. He declined further comment.

According to the internal affiliation database, the ISU Campus Greens are not affiliated with the national organization, said Andrew Dobbyn, member of the greens’ National Student Committee. The national organization is undergoing some organizational difficulties, however.

Currently, there is no exact count of official members. There are, however, more than 100 people on the e-mail discussion list, which will continue to operate if the campus organization disbands, Bright said.

The Campus Greens have held several events in the past year, including celebrating Earth Day and inviting guest lecturers.

If students are interested in working with the Green Party, there is a Story County chapter that meets at Stomping Grounds at 5:10 p.m. the fourth Monday of each month, Bright said. She recommended students attend a meeting or contact Jeff Hall, list keeper for the campus organization.

Laura Bestler-Wilcox, program coordinator of campus organizations, said she has received no official notification that the group is disbanding.

Whitney Buchman, secretary for the campus Greens and senior in animal ecology, said nothing had been heard about the organization disbanding.

Buchman and Hall declined further comment.
