Volleyballers travel to Boulder, can’t beat the Buffaloes again this time
October 26, 2005
The ISU volleyball team couldn’t contain Colorado’s hitting presence Wednesday night in a Big 12 duel in Boulder.
Colorado’s senior right-side hitter Allie Griffin cut through the Cyclone offense with a match-high 14 kills on the night. It had been Iowa State’s goal to slow down the All-Big 12 Buffalo.
Iowa State’s record declined to 13-10 overall and 6-6 in the conference, while Colorado’s plumped to 10-7 and 6-6 in the Big 12 as well. Colorado claimed the three-game sweep only four weeks after Iowa State had handed them the same fate.
Iowa State’s Erin Boeve achieved greatness in the face of defeat by setting the school record for single-season block assists with No. 119 in the third game. She topped the 117 set by Diane Doles in 1995. Current player Ashlie McWee is third on the list with 113.
Colorado began the game with a service error, and another attack error put the Cyclones up early. The Buffaloes soon got in sync, however, and both teams passed points for the remainder of the game.
The largest lead of the game was a four-point Colorado margin after a kill by Griffin at point 25, and the Buffaloes would continue rack up a .277 hitting percentage. A decisive slam from Amber Sutherland ended the contest for a 30-27 Colorado win. Colorado became more comfortable in its home setting in game two, bursting out to a 7-0 lead before Cyclone Katie Jessen notched a kill for Iowa State’s first point.
The Buffaloes didn’t stop there, accumulating as much as a 10-point lead.
Iowa State’s only run lasted for four points. Colorado finished its easy task over Iowa State with another kill from Sutherland for a breezy 30-21 win. The Cyclones were held to a .048 hitting percentage while Colorado cleaned up with .452.
Boeve started game three with a kill that sparked the Cyclones to 4-1 lead. Each team only garnered a handful of points over the other, the most being a temporary four-point ISU lead.
Iowa State held on to lead 29-28 toward the end of the game, but Colorado pushed through and secured the 31-29 win.
The Cyclones’ Jessica Klein accrued 13 kills, the only double-digit hitting mark on the team. Meghan Ferrie and Nicole Lorenzen trailed with eight kills apiece, while Jessen topped out at seven. Boeve was held by the Colorado defense to only four slams.
Amanda Craig notched a double-double for the Cyclones with 33 assists and 16 digs. Her setting effort on the night moved her to sixth on Iowa State’s all-time assists records by passing Missy Roberts’ 1984 to 1987 career mark.
Jessen followed Craig in a low-dig night with seven saves, while Laura Cady and Katie Churm each had six.
Colorado’s offense was primarily powered by Griffin, but with Iowa State’s steady eye on her, it was time for Sutherland to shine.
She tabbed 12 kills on the night, followed by Lara Bossow with 10. Colorado posted a collective .333 hitting percentage on the night.
Ashley Nu’u directed the Buffalo offense with 42 assists, while Nicole Carr powered the defense with 11 digs.
