A representative from The 10,000 Hours Show addressed the Government of the Student Body on Wednesday.

Katie Petersen, senior in plant health and protection, presented a slide show and talked about the volunteer program. The purpose of the program is to enhance the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations by having more people volunteer, which will build stronger communities, Petersen said.

Volunteers who comply with the minimum of 10 service hours during a 12-month period are treated to a concert in the spring. Only the volunteers may attend. Headliners in previous concerts have included Ben Folds and Guster. The band to perform this year will be announced in February, Petersen said.

The 10,000 Hours Show started in September 2002, when University of Iowa students Jacek Pruski and Mike Brooks shared their common interest in volunteer work.

A Student Affairs Commission resolution was also discussed by the senate. The purpose of the resolution is to create an official advisory body of students to collaborate with the Ames City Council about issues that concern students, said Tony Borich, ex-officio City Council student liaison and senior in community and regional planning.

The commission will consist mostly of student members, but will contain some nonstudent members. The resolution will be proposed at the Sept. 27 council meeting.

“It’s a good way to get input and get the students perspective involved,” Borich said.

GSB President Angela Groh supported the formation of the commission.
