Clothing, like a fine wine, gets better with age

Fashion for this fall is vintage all the way.

With a swirling kaleidoscope of rich colors and bold patterns inspired by bohemian style and old-world Europe, there are plenty of options for everyone’s taste.

“Fall is my favorite season for fashion because of the colors and all the new styles of jeans that start to come out,” says Vance Watts, freshman in pre-journalism and mass communication.

For girls, black is back. Black has reappeared as a practical and chic look for everything from accessories to outfits. This time around, it’s embellished with details and full-volume fabrics that make it a not-so-basic color.

But black isn’t the only color flying off the rack at clothing stores.

Earth tones and hot colors such as browns, grays, navy, and deep greens, oranges and reds are most popular. For all of the girls and guys who went all-out during the pink craze last year, sorry, but brights are way over.

“We have all new western vintage and peasant tops in earthy colors that have been very popular for girls,” says A.J. Vancannon, manager-in-training at the Buckle in North Grand Mall.

These earthy tones complement the bohemian look that has been sweeping the nation for girls. This includes bold accessories such as layers of cuff bracelets and long, beaded necklaces with oversized beads. Also, ditch the “celebutante” lip glossy make-up look and wear less.

To go along with the vintage craze, destroyed jeans with holes for both guys and girls are huge this season. Some even have the bleach stains and oil marks already there to make them look even dirtier.

“Jeans with destruction paired with big belts have been our biggest seller this fall,” Vancannon says.

Guys should wear this look with vintage T-shirts and track jackets and possibly a leather necklace or wristband, Vancannon says. Old-school Converse and Steve Madden shoes work perfectly to finish off any outfit.

“The most popular thing for guys this fall has been our vintage T-shirts with humor writing on them, mostly the ones with sexual innuendo,” says Blair Verhoef, an employee of Hollister at the Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines.

For girls clothing, it’s embellished everything, from camisoles, sequined belts and slipper shoes to metallic hobo handbags and flip-flops.

Peasant tops or sequined camis mixed with short embellished sweaters and long cotton skirts with knee-high boots add fresh, seductive detail and create the perfect look.

“The layered look with lacy shirts and sequined belts for girls has been our biggest seller,” Verhoef says.

One final thing needs to be said when it comes to girls’ fashion this fall: gauchos. For the uninformed, these are the wide, cropped knee-length pants that have been seen all around campus. Usually knit, they come in all different kinds of fabric and are cute, comfortable and practical.
